Catholic Commute S02E44 5 Things to DO while in times of Scandal

Avoid anger, stick to the Truth

This is the worst time of American Catholicism to date. It’s now harder than ever to be Catholic and stand tall amidst the recent barrage of scandals. With such terrible, public, and shameful sin from the very top leadership of the Church, what are we to do?

In this episode I try to give 5 practical and helpful things that each and every Catholic should do right now. We can do the most good when we start by looking at ourselves – and there is plenty to do for each of us. Don’t be overwhelmed by the anger and hatred out there. Stick to the Truth, and Truth will guide us.

S02E44 5 Things to DO while in times of Scandal

Open with Psalm 6, the first of the penitential Psalms

Psalm 6

Prayer for Recovery from Grave Illness

To the leader: with stringed instruments; according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David.

1 O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger,

   or discipline me in your wrath.

2 Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing;

   O Lord, heal me, for my bones are shaking with terror.

3 My soul also is struck with terror,

   while you, O Lord—how long?

4 Turn, O Lord, save my life;

   deliver me for the sake of your steadfast love.

5 For in death there is no remembrance of you;

   in Sheol who can give you praise?

6 I am weary with my moaning;

   every night I flood my bed with tears;

   I drench my couch with my weeping.

7 My eyes waste away because of grief;

   they grow weak because of all my foes.

8 Depart from me, all you workers of evil,

   for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.

9 The Lord has heard my supplication;

   the Lord accepts my prayer.

10 All my enemies shall be ashamed and struck with terror;

   they shall turn back, and in a moment be put to shame.

I long debated if I wanted to do an episode about the Scandal.

  1. Write to your bishop and the pope.
  • Germany/Russia fell due to the people not taking action when they could
  • Gulag Archipelago (Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn) and Man’s Search for Meaning (Victor Frankl)
  • Ask for an investigation lead by lay investigator types. Bishop Barren’s recommendations sound about right.
  • Ask for complete transparency and openness. No more cover ups.
  1. Decide why you will stay Catholic.
  • 1 peter 3:14-17 But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear,[b] and do not be intimidated, 15 but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; 16 yet do it with gentleness and reverence.[c] Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame.
  • People ARE going to ask. You need to have reasons.
  • People are going to attack. You need to have a safe harbor
  1. Do Penance.
  • We hear the readings every Ash Wednesday. Time to live them.
  • Choose something to give up for a bit.
  • Set aside extra time for prayer.
  • We will never know who is guilty, and how much. We hear stories of everyone from lowly seminarians to the Pope Himself. It is not our place to judge people. We correctly judge the actions to be wrong. For the sake of the victims, we do penance.
  • Pray the Rosary.
  1. Pray for our Leadership
  • The devil attacks the leadership of the true church more fervently than anywhere else.
  • History is full of scandals that start in the leadership. From Old Testament to now
    • Cain kills Abel.
    • Noah gets drunk as soon as he gets off the boat.
    • Abraham sleeps with Hagar
    • Aaron creates the golden calf
    • Moses hits a rock instead of speaking
    • King David, a “man after God’s own heart”….
    • Every single Disciple abandons Jesus.
    • Most Heresies are started by bishops and leaders
    • The contraception teaching of the 70s and 80s (right after Humanae Vitae) could be considered a scandal of the leadership.
    • Our leadership is fragile and human. The devil is angelic. Our leaders are out-gunned on their own.
  • This scandal will eventually blow over. Our leadership will still need prayer just as much then, if not more.
  1. Be Publically Catholic
  • This really is a call to a “white” martyrdom. It is not going to be easy to be publically catholic for awhile now.
  • “I cannot support what the leaders have done, but the church still speaks the truth.”
  • “History is full of examples of people who have done very bad things who also spoke the truth.”
  • “Real changes are being made. These threats are being responded to. The levels of sexual abuse in the Catholic church are now lower than any other organization in existence, and going down! The leadership change will ironically take longer, but it is in motion.”
  • Admit the fault of the people readily, and respond to the attacks with humility. Don’t listen to what’s not true.
  • St. Jerome: An arrow never lodges in a stone; often it recoils upon the bowman. Let the detractor learn, from your unwillingness to listen, not to be so eager to detract.
