Change is awesome, it's transition we don't like

Most of us men in particular think that “change” is a dirty word. We don’t like it, we fight against it, and we wish we could just put something in one place and have it stay there! Yet life doesn’t work that way, and deep down, even we eventually admit we do like some things to change from time to time.

The painful part of change is actually the transition required to get there. Rather than lament the process, we can study it to better understand and quickly drive through the pain. In this episode I discuss the 8 steps that take place in any change, whether at home or work, for lots of people or just for yourself.

Patron Saint: Returning to St. Thomas Aquinas and Wisdom

Personal change still involves a committee.


  1. Ignorance
    1. No unified sense of direction or priorities, “in the dark”
    2. Most of the topics of are lives are in this state
    3. It’s very safe – we don’t have to think about it.
    4. P. J. O’Rourke “My ignorance is widespread.”
    5. Ephesians 4:18 “They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of their ignorance and hardness of heart.”
  2. Information
    1. Information given, not initially embraced
    2. New and scary.  Sometimes our wives dump this on us and expect to be done.
    3. We start to realize that a “transition” is coming
    4. Hosea 4:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge;
         because you have rejected knowledge,
         I reject you from being a priest to me.”
  3. Infusion
    1. New iea starts to penetrate, confronts apathy, prejudice, and tradition. People tend to focus on problems
    2. First time it gets “Real”
    3. In this state, need to remember the purpose, passion of the end result of change
    4. Don’t rush this step if you are orchestrating the change.
    5. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (Frankenstein) “Nothing is so painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change.”
  4. Individual Change
    1. Early adopters begin to see the benefits and embrace. Personal convictions replace complacency
    2. First wave of excitement
    3. Still possible to be squashed, still delicate
    4. Isaiah 43:19 “I am about to do a new thing;
         now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
      I will make a way in the wilderness
         and rivers in the desert.
  5. Organizational Change
    1. Two sides of issue are being discussed. Less defensiveness and more openness. Momentum shifts from anti- to pro-change.
    2. People now start to realize that this is actually going to happen, and start to jump on the bandwagon to not be left behind
    3. Still some resistance
    4. Jeremiah 29:11 For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.
  6. Awkward Application
    1. Some failures and some successes as change is finally implemented. Rapid learning process
    2. Nearly completely implemented now. Still struggling with how to deal with it
    3. Last holdouts may still be squeaking.
    4. Need to have forgiveness for little mistakes
    5. 2 Corinthians 5:17 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!
  7. Integration
    1. Awkwardness decreases, acceptance increases. Growing accomplishments, secondary wave of results and successes occurs.
    2. Even the hold-out-ers are now embracing the change
    3. Encourage thoughtfulness rather than further support
    4. Doubting Thomas cries out “My Lord and My God.”
  8. Innovation
    1. Confidence and willing to take risks.  Boldness. (not baldness)
    2. This is the phase where you feel compelled to tell your friends
    3. Start looking for your next change now! (different topic or whatever). Don’t sit on laurels.
    4. Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
