Catholic Commute S02E26 Resist the Devil

If you don't, you are going to lose

Although no one likes to think or talk about it, the truth is that the devil is very real.  He has one intent, and it’s not pretty.  We need to take him and the threat he brings seriously, or we’re going to trip – more than we do already.  My goal is not to be scary, but to provide encouragement.

In this episode I explore some ways both to identify where in your life the devil has a grip, but also to give some practical advice for ways to start getting free. God set us free for freedom’s sake, so fight for it!  It’s worth it!

S02E26 Resist the Devil

Story from Catholic Stuff You Should Know

St Benedict

one day the Devil sought to tempt St. Benedict to lust. The evil spirit brought to his remembrance an attractive woman he once knew, and the memory began to enflame his heart. Benedict was almost overcome by the passion. Just in time, he saw a nearby thicket full of nettles and briars. So he stripped off his habit and threw himself naked into the midst of those sharp, stinging thorns. He rolled around in them until his body was scratched all over — and the temptation was gone.

A Prayer by Saint Benedict for Seekers of Faith
Gracious and Holy Father,
give us the wisdom to discover You,
the intelligence to understand You,
the diligence to seek after You,
the patience to wait for You,
eyes to behold You,
a heart to meditate upon You,
and a life to proclaim You,
through the power of the Spirit of Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

How to know when the Devil has a grip on you:

  1. I don’t want others to know what is happening
  2. I try to justify a choice
  3. There’s no true happiness or peace./my joy has been robbed
  4. Deep down I know it is wrong

Ways to fight back:

  1. I am insufficient
    1. Romans 7:18-19 For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do.
  2. Immerse in the sacraments
    1. “Someone once told the Catholic writer Flannery O’Connor that it is more open-minded to think that the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar is a great, wonderful, powerful symbol.

Her response was, “If it’s only a symbol, to hell with it.”
      ― Flannery O’Connor
    2. “Protestants believe that the sacraments are like ladders that God gave to us by which we can climb up to Him. Catholics believe that they are like ladders that God gave to Himself by which He climbs down to us.”
      ― Peter Kreeft, Jesus-Shock
  3. Confide in true friends
    1. Jim Rohn “You’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with”
    2. Mathew Kelly “You will learn more from your friends than you ever will from books. Choose your friends wisely.”
    3. When you don’t have any, pray and seek
    4. “In friendship…we think we have chosen our peers. In reality a few years’ difference in the dates of our births, a few more miles between certain houses, the choice of one university instead of another…the accident of a topic being raised or not raised at a first meeting–any of these chances might have kept us apart. But, for a Christian, there are, strictly speaking no chances. A secret master of ceremonies has been at work. Christ, who said to the disciples, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you,” can truly say to every group of Christian friends, “Ye have not chosen one another but I have chosen you for one another.” The friendship is not a reward for our discriminating and good taste in finding one another out. It is the instrument by which God reveals to each of us the beauties of others.”
― C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves
  4. Get an accountability partner
    1. Creates a habit of analysing your goals
    2. You’ll stop making lame excuses
    3. Gives you a different angle
    4. Find more friends/network
    5. Celebrate Success
  5. Read good books about it
    1. Matthew Kelly always challenges us that if we show him what books we plan to read this year, he can predict who we’ll become.
    2. Leaders are Readers
    3. I meet guy after guy who says he just “doesn’t read.”  Does he eat?

A Prayer to Saint Benedict for Protection
Dear Saint Benedict, I thank God for showering you with His grace to love Him above all else and to establish a monastic rule that has helped so many of His children live full and holy lives.
Through the cross of Jesus Christ, I ask you to please intercede that God might protect me, my loved ones, my home, property, possessions, and workplace today and always by your holy blessing, that we may never be separated from Jesus, Mary, and the company of all the blessed.  Through your intercession may we be delivered from temptation, spiritual oppression, physical ills, and disease. Protect us from drug and alcohol abuse, impurity and immorality, objectionable companions, and negative attitudes. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
